Persuasive

Writing a persuasive piece is particularly difficult because we tend to write our own personal opinion and give reasons for it based on our own beliefs. Or we use other peoples' opinions. However, the problem with this is we tend to forget to add supporting facts and statistics.

This can be improved by reading over our essays and correcting them. It can also be improved by following the acronym S.E.S.I.C.U; This is by explaining the state, explaining our thesis, providing support, illustrating an example, connecting the example to the statement, and uniting the paragraphs.

Furthermore, in order to improve these skills, we need to read our work over and correct it. If we fail to improve, we should not be in this course.

Third Speech

How is this speech similar to and different from the other two studied?

This speech is similar to the other speeches because of it's writing patterns. Again the speech acquires running sentences rather than short. It has rhetorical devices, for instance inclusion. Barack directs this speech more towards the history of America and the power of the nation.

It is different because again Barack discusses the nations ability to prosper and become strong. He does not mention his Grandmother or family as he did in his previous speeches. Obama is directing his entire speech to America's history and their hardships they struggled through. Also he thanks President Bush and McCain, while in his previous speeches he was in opposition of them. In his previous speeches he used many anecdotes, while in this speech he barely used one.

In regards to all the differences, President Barack Obama is still a succesful spokesperson. He captures the audience with any style of writing. His confidence and ability to speak are alone the strengths he has on all of us.

Obama's Victory Speech

Is there a pattern in the speech writing?
What are the most common rhetorical techniques used in both speeches?
Why are these particular techniques used and why are they so effective?

Obama is a gifted spokesperson. His collected attitude towards the audience and his intelligence somehow direct the audience to become in favor of him. A pattern that is visible in his speeches are how he frequently mentions his family and Grandmother. Obama also thanks the Americans for their support in all of his speeches. His Victory Speech was shorter however, than the first two speeches we had discussed earlier. Another pattern noticeable in his speeches is how he rarely uses periods. His sentences are very long, and he rarely has any sentences that have less than 15 words in them. For example:

"This country is more generous than one where a man in Indiana has to pack up the equipment he's worked on for twenty years and watch it shipped off to China, and then chokes up as he explains how he felt like a failure when he went home to tell his family the news. "

Barack Obama uses a lot of rhetorical devices in his speeches. He tends to use anecdotes, for example:

"Four years ago, I stood before you and told you my story - of the brief union between a young man from Kenya and a young woman from Kansas who weren't well-off or well-known, but shared a belief that in America, their son could achieve whatever he put his mind to."

He also uses inclusion, for example:

"For eighteen long months, you have stood up, one by one, and said enough to the politics of the past. You understand that in this election, the greatest risk we can take is to try the same old politics with the same old players and expect a different result. You have shown what history teaches us..."

He also uses repetition, chiasmus, hyperboles, and cause and effect.

These particular techniques are used because they capture the audience. The techniques win the audiences attention and draw them towards Obama. When Obama uses inclusion, it is higly effective because he relates with the audience. He makes his audience feel meaningful and important. When he uses hyperboles he inspires his audience. The anecdotes allow the audience to know that he too, is a normal human being like them, with normal personal stories, a man who just want's America to prosper and be a happy country.

Obama has wisdom and knowledge and he uses it to get what he wants.

Barack Obama's Speech

Blog your thoughtful reactions to each speech. (250-500 words)
What makes it effective?
What impresses you most about it?
How is it different listening to it, than reading it?

Barack Obama is a succesful spokesperson. His use of words and tone of voice are captivating and dominant for the audience. He speaks not for certain groups or races in America, but he speaks on behalf of the entire countries beliefs. Obama is a respected man by many, not only for his courage to be the first running president but for his love and passion for his family. In this speech he states his love for his wife and children, along with how proud he is of them. His knowledge, his articulation, and his poise are all factors that make his speeches effective. He is passionate about his speeches and when he speaks them they are full of feeling. What impresses me most about his speech is his love for his family. You can feel by his tone of voice the love, appreciation, compassion and care he has for his family. How he uses anecdotes of his childhood along with his wifes in his speeches. How he speaks of his deceased grandmother who raised him. Reading his speech is interesting, however hearing it is more prominent because you can hear the tone of his voice. He pauses at the correct moments, and he puts exaggeration on certain words. He is absolutely amazing in drawing the audience towards him and accepting him. Remarkable.
